African Radio Astronomy
As a region with a long history of astronomical research, the beginning of the 21st century has witnessed a renewal of Africa’s position as a centre of scientific excellence. The potential development of the Square Kilometre Array on African soil comes at a time of increasing astronomical activity across Africa. The most dramatic examples of this include the ongoing roll out of South Africa’s MeerKAT demonstrator array and encouraging signs for an African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) array. These newer instruments have emerged from a strong heritage of astronomical excellence; notably through the world-renowned HESS telescope in Namibia and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in South Africa.
